With the 2024 election approaching, one of the questions on people’s minds is how the two candidates will handle the tech sector. Deborah Perry Piscione knows a lot about money and technology. She founded the Work3 Institute and thinks about how government affects business.

Here’s what she thinks could happen to technology in America if Donald Trump becomes president again.

More stringent towards Chinese technology

Piscione believes Trump will be more stringent with Chinese tech companies.

“If Trump wins the 2024 election, his technology priorities could include escalating technology competition with China,” she said. “Trump could expand bans or restrictions on Chinese technology companies operating in the U.S. or accessing U.S. technology, further separating the U.S. and Chinese technology sectors.”

She also spoke about a major problem facing Silicon Valley: “Moreover, a key issue that is likely to come under scrutiny is the influx of foreign investment into strategic technology hubs, particularly Chinese real estate investment in Silicon Valley.”

He believes Trump may introduce new rules on who can buy land in important tech areas.

Changing the way social media works

Piscione believes Trump will try to change the way social media companies are run.

“A significant push to change the regulation of social media,” she said. “This could mean major changes to Section 230, potentially limiting the content moderation powers of major platforms and making them more accountable for user-generated content.”

Put simply, social media companies may need to pay more attention to what people post on their websites.

Speeding up the Internet

Trump may also focus on speeding up internet connections.

Piscione said there could be “(a) strong push to advance 5G and 6G technologies. This could include rapidly deploying 5G networks nationwide, allocating more spectrum for these technologies, providing tax incentives for infrastructure investments and increasing funding for 6G research to maintain the U.S.’s leadership position in telecommunications.”

This means striving to make America the fastest country in terms of high-speed Internet.

Why these elections are important

Piscione believes this election could change the way America approaches technology.

“A nation that leads in key technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing and advanced telecommunications is likely to have a significant economic and geopolitical advantage,” she added.

In other words, the country with the best technology can have more power in the world.

If Trump wins, Piscione believes there could be big changes in how America treats other countries when it comes to technology.

She said: “As technology increasingly becomes a tool of soft power and economic leverage, it will play a central role in diplomatic relations, alliance building and the structures of global governance.”

Technology could impact America’s relationships with other countries.

“The elected leadership will need to grapple with complex issues such as data privacy, cybersecurity and the ethical implications of emerging technologies, while also creating an environment that fosters innovation and sustains economic competitiveness,” she said.

So whoever becomes president will be tasked with protecting information and helping American technology companies grow.
