Most Disposable Kitchen Gadgets Aren’t Worth Their Price — Except for This $10 Cherry Corer

I’ve always thought cherry pits were an appropriate name, since removing them is, well, pits. And while I, a former professional baker, have always loved cherry-infused treats—pies, jams, sauces—I’ve never really enjoyed making them. That is, until recently, when I reluctantly tried out Amazon’s best-selling Ordekcity Cherry Pitter for the first time. I’m generally not a fan of disposable gadgets, but I have to say: Does this make a difference? If you’re planning on taking advantage of summer’s bounty of mini stone fruits, I highly recommend stocking up on one of these time-savers. It’ll cost you just $10, but it’ll save you a lot of precious minutes and a lot of headaches.

Summer fruits are so much more enjoyable when they take no longer to prepare than to eat. This handy gadget gets the job done in a snap.

If you’ve never used an Ordekcity cherry pitter, this is a simple solution to the problem that delivers solid results. Simply place the cherry under the stainless steel rod, press down, and the pit is ejected down through a small chute. Now you don’t have to cut each cherry in half and manually pick out the pits, which is slow, annoying, and messy.

I haven’t done the math myself, but the manufacturer claims it can pit 100 cherries in three minutes, and I believe it—it literally takes a second. I haven’t noticed much fruit sticking to the pits and going to waste. Oh, and it can also pit olives! (Okay, so that’s not necessarily disposable gadget — you can sue me!)

Is this a cherry pitter? this kitchen accessory of summer 2024? I’m leaning towards a “yes” answer. (Amazon)

It looks like this tool is not too niche, considering that over 1,800 users have given it the maximum five-star rating.

“This cherry pitter is perfect,” shared a happy customer. “Works like a charm. No hand strength required (I have arthritis in my hands and had no problem using it). Plus, it’s quick and easy to use. I ended up eating a mountain of fresh cherries.”

“I waited to order a ‘disposable’ tool, but it turned out to be more than just a cherry corer,” wrote another. “It’s a grape corer, it’s a strawberry corer, it’s an olive corer… I have to say it—“OLIVE”!

“It works great and I like the silicone base the cherry rests on because it doesn’t crush the fruit,” said a third. “I highly recommend it to anyone who works with whole fruit.”

“I recommend checking to make sure the pit is actually out,” one shopper noted. “Sometimes the pit gets stuck in the cherry and won’t come out. If I don’t see it coming out, I double-check. Plus, there’s a bit of splatter, so don’t wear the shirt you’re looking for. But this tool is compact, easy to clean, and saves a ton of time.”

“The only downside is that it can spray a little cherry juice on you,” a recent fan echoed. “So I just throw mine in a bowl and avoid the mess. Really nice product.”

Another summer must-have? This crazy-looking cuber:

So how does this device work? Well, you’ll still have to slice the watermelon into quarters the traditional way (sorry, there’s no way around that). But once you’ve done that, simply place the knife against the cut side of one quarter and push. Its fan-like blades will slice the fruit into evenly sized cubes, and the long handle will act as a sort of conveyor belt for the sliced pieces. There’s even a handy measuring guide on the side, in case you want the cubes to be a specific height. From there, you’ll empty the cubes out of the handle as you go, working your way through the watermelon row by row. No more slippery knives or sharp pieces that look like they were cut by a toddler.

“This is the best purchase I’ve made for summer,” raved a reviewer. “I hate cutting watermelons, but this has completely changed my mind. I cut through three in about 10 minutes. It’s also very easy to clean.”
