Laredo City Parks Highlights July 4th Celebration Rules and Regulations

LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) – This coming Thursday, millions of people across the country will be celebrating our country’s independence – including the people of Laredo.

Seven-year-old Krystal Castillo is one of many children looking forward to the July 4 celebration at Independence Hills Park.

“Something cool, something cool to see (like) fireworks or maybe we’ll buy fireworks to do that,” Krystal shares. “We’ll set up a tent there so we can see the fireworks.”

This celebration will be one of many events where people can come together to celebrate the colours red, white and blue.

“I come to this park to celebrate with my family and watch the fireworks. I don’t know if we’ll eat out or eat at home,” says Yanira Lopez, a mother from Laredo, about her Independence Day plans.

Lopez says he enjoys fireworks displays but thinks they should be left to the professionals.

“I think the most dangerous are the small fireworks, the ones that kids use, but not the ones they use here,” he says.

The City of Laredo Parks Director encourages families to bring food, drinks and snacks to the parks, but park visitors should keep a few rules in mind.

Director JJ Gomez says, “We have quite a few (amount of) barbecue areas in the parks, but you’re not allowed to bring anything that could start a fire on the grounds. If they bring something with little legs that they can help them stand up, they’re allowed. Of course, you’re also not allowed to drink alcohol in the parks.”

While fireworks displays may be considered an annual tradition that many people look forward to, Laredo Police Detective Joe Baeza says they are prohibited within city limits.

“We have a lot of dry areas and a lot of bushes, and we also get a lot of calls about accidental fireworks,” Inv. Baeza tells us. “You can’t control where they are, especially the aerial ones, so (they can) start fires, especially if you live near monte or bushes.”
