Qatar reaffirms commitment to support Pakistan in climate-sensitive sectors

Delegations discuss disaster risk management, environmental protection, water management, energy and forestry

ISLAMABAD:

Qatar reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Pakistan in addressing climate change challenges in sectors such as health, education, food security, water and energy.

The confirmation came during a high-level meeting of the Qatari technical delegation led by Colonel Ahmed Abdullah Al-Abdullah with Romina Khurshid Alam, Prime Minister’s Coordinator for Climate Change, held in Islamabad on Thursday.

The meeting focused on cooperation in the areas of climate risk management, environmental protection, water management, energy, forestry and disaster risk management.

The Qatari delegation pledged to provide comprehensive technical and non-technical support to help Pakistan combat climate change and achieve its environmental, disaster risk management and flood protection goals.

The delegation briefed the Prime Minister’s Coordinator on ongoing efforts to help Pakistan combat climate change.

Romina informed the delegation about government initiatives to increase resilience to climate change and protect the lives and livelihoods of vulnerable communities.

She stressed that Pakistan is grappling with severe impacts of climate change, including heatwaves and devastating floods during monsoon season, which are affecting various sectors of the economy.

Colonel Abdullah praised the Pakistan government’s efforts in environmental protection, climate risk management and disaster management.

Romina expressed gratitude to the Qatari delegation for its declaration of support in the fight against climate change and the implementation of environmental protection goals.
