ENCE will open pre-registration for the Artificial Intelligence in Public Policy course

On July 5, the National School of Statistical Sciences (ENCE) will open pre-registration for the course Artificial Intelligence in Public PoliciesClass of 2024. The purpose of this course is to introduce and discuss the use of artificial intelligence (AI), especially generative models of language, in generating evidence to inform and evaluate public programs and policies.

Interested persons should visit the website https://ence.ibge.gov.br/index.php/trilhas/cdbdia, where they can find more information about the course. The link to the pre-registration form will be available from July 5 (Friday) from 9:00 a.m. to July 12, 9:00 a.m. Sixty places will be offered, and the order of registration will be one of the criteria for selecting students, as will the distribution by main region, gender, and by external and internal audience.

A full college degree is required, and knowledge and involvement in public policy are desirable. The 30-hour course will begin August 9 and run for five weeks, through September 6. It includes remote synchronous classes (classes and discussions) on Fridays, from 9:00 a.m. to noon, and asynchronous classes (reading and research).

The course will be led by professors Paulo Jannuzzi (ENCE/IBGE) and Vicente Rocha (UFG). They will present basic concepts in public policy, as well as a brief history, definitions and tools of AI. The following topics will be covered:

  • What is public policy: basic concepts, typology, and implementation cycle/spiral.
  • Artificial Intelligence: Definitions, Background and Area of ​​Research.
  • Generative Language Models: Characteristics and Tools
  • IAPP project and use of ChatPP in specific cases
  • The potential and limitations of using AI in public policies

ChatPP is an AI resource that can answer questions about the formulation and management of public programs and policies. The tool is part of the Network of Artificial Intelligence and Public Policies (IAPP), a cross-institutional and cross-disciplinary research initiative in the form of a collaborative network involving universities, study centers, research institutions, and government agencies.

Educational paths

The Artificial Intelligence in Public Policy course is part of the education path Data Science, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence (CDBDIA)ENCE/IBGE project, which will offer other courses within this subject. The first course was Introduction to Data Scienceoffered from May to July for those who want to understand the fundamentals and real-world applications of data science. A third course on Big Data and Official Statistics is also scheduled for this year. Other courses and tracks are being developed and will be launched soon.
