The ANC emphasises that there is political certainty and all existing government policies remain in force

The African National Congress (ANC) says there is policy certainty, emphasising that all current government actions remain effective, without exception.

In a statement issued on Thursday morning, the party clarified that there are no approved mandates for individual ministers serving in the Government of National Unity (GNU).

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s executive branch is made up of various political parties following the 2024 general election in which no party won a clear majority.

The organizations within the GNU take different approaches to national issues, including foreign policy, redress, and land redistribution.

As GNU ministers begin their duties, some of them are unsure what policy to adopt.

This uncertainty prompted some GNU signatories to toe the party line in their new roles. However, the ANC was quick to remind them that existing policies were in place.

The ANC drew attention to clause 19.3 of the statement of intent signed by the GNU partners, which states that in order to change a policy, a majority must be recruited by the party intending to enact, amend or introduce a new policy.

The ANC noted that sealed mandates for individual GNU ministers would be contrary to both the Statement of Intent and the spirit of the country’s constitution.
