Due to a failure, books cannot be downloaded from Amazon Kindle readers

The ongoing outage prevents Amazon Kindle users from downloading both new and previously purchased books to their e-readers. According to moderators responding to users reporting the issue on Amazon’s support forums, the company is aware of the issue and is “currently working on a fix.” Trying other troubleshooting steps, such as resetting the device, hasn’t resolved the issue, so users may have to wait it out for now.

A good e-book reader reported the issue on Wednesday, noting the response from Amazon Support that it was the result of “server issues” and that “it will take at least 48 hours for your eBooks to begin downloading again, but it could take longer.”

Edge has reached out to Amazon for details. We’ll update this post if we learn more.

Reddit users have been sharing similar issues with their Kindles, and there have been several reports on Amazon’s support forums that Kindles can only download book titles and covers before the progress indicator stops at 1 percent. The outage also appears to affect books that users try to download from Overdrive to their Kindles using Libby. However, book downloads to the Amazon Kindle app for iOS and Android are not affected.

This latest issue comes a week after several Kindle users on Reddit reported an issue with Amazon’s “Send to Kindle” feature, which lets you sideload e-books and documents onto your e-reader without having to connect it to a computer. Some users received error messages saying their files “could not be delivered due to a service error,” while other users in the thread were still seeing issues with the service earlier this week.
