Yobe launches state policy on internally displaced persons

The Yobe State Government has launched a state internally displaced persons policy to alleviate their needs and help them cope with their challenges.

The policy is the first of its kind. It was launched on Thursday at the Yar’ Adua Centre by Governor Mai Mala Buni, and was attended by representatives of the diplomatic community, donor agencies, the World Bank and other development partners.

The World Bank, the National Disaster Management Agency and the National Refugee Commission have commended the Yobe State government for producing a policy document that they say meets best practices and standards.

The World Bank particularly praised Governor Buni for his perseverance and commitment and assured the northeastern state of its support.

Speaking about the policy initiative, Governor Buni said his administration has taken conscious and deliberate steps to create a policy document that is holistic, comprehensive and in line with international standards.

He said: “This policy was the result of extensive consultation and collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders, including UN agencies, the World Bank, the Federal Government of Nigeria, local communities, non-governmental organisations, civil society organisations, traditional rulers, international donor partners and especially the internally displaced people themselves and representatives of the various communities. It embodies our shared determination to protect the rights and dignity of internally displaced persons, offering them a path to regain stability and rebuild their lives towards a lasting solution.

“By prioritizing the holistic well-being of internally displaced persons, we aim to support sustainable development and promote peace and stability in our state and across Nigeria. The policy is guided by the key principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality and independence. It sets out our strategic objectives in ensuring protection, providing access to basic services and supporting sustainable solutions to displacement.”

“Furthermore, today’s launch is a testament to our commitment to transparency, accountability and collaboration. We recognise that the success of this policy depends on the collective efforts of all sectors of society, including government agencies, civil society, the private sector and international partners. It is through these partnerships that we can mobilise the necessary resources, expertise and support to effectively implement this policy.”

He said his administration had gained a reputation for accountability, transparency, integrity and good governance, which earned the state a prestigious award from the State Fiscal Transparency, Accountability and Sustainability programme supported by the World Bank.

“I therefore want to assure you that all resources will be mobilised to support the state’s policy towards internally displaced persons in the country.”
