Leak Suggests Apple Is Developing A New Smart Home Device Combining Apple TV and HomePod Features

We have been hearing rumors regarding the possibility of a new smart accessory making its place in Apple’s home ecosystem, which will feature a combination of the capabilities of both HomePod and Apple TV. Now, with a recent code discovered, we might have the confirmation we needed to know that a new accessory might be in the works that might be coming out to compete with Amazon Echo Show and Google Nest Hub, which have marked their positions strongly as smart home devices.

A recent code discovery confirms Apple is working on a new versatile home accessory for a seamless home automation experience

A recent discovery by MacRumors of a code reference on Apple’s backend further clarifies the long-speculated smart home device in the works. This could potentially be a huge pivot in Apple’s ecosystem, which currently entails Apple TV and HomePod. The device could sport an LCD touchscreen similar to the Apple TV, offer multiple functionalities for a more seamless experience, and be a valuable addition to the home accessory lineup.

The code was found with a specific reference category, “HomeAccessory17,1,” which shares similarities with the name identifier of HomePod’s “AudioAccessory” but has a distinctive bell to it, hinting at a new product category under works. This suggests that the device could be your go-to for all your smart home solutions or needs, acting as the central hub for home automation.

There is a likelihood that the 17.1 will be equipped with an A18 chip to help power the Home Accessory with the necessary Apple Intelligence capabilities. The same chipset is expected to be used in the latest iPhone 16 later this year. The new smart home display is expected to run on a version of tvOS, with earlier evidence pointing towards homeOS in development, and the homeOS could be a combination of tvOS and HomePod software that eventually becomes the platform sporting the new addition to the HomePod lineup.

The code further mentions two Apple TV models yet to be released: AppleTV14.4 and AppleTV14.5, which hints at a potential upgraded version of the Apple TV coming out in 2024. The Cupertino tech giant has some significant product upgrades planned for the September launch, such as the new iPhone and Apple Watch, and there is a chance that we could see the new smart home device being unveiled simultaneously.

The promising capabilities of the home accessory, such as the ability to control HomeKit and other apps for a continuous smart home experience, could be the company’s attempt to take on Meta Portal, and the smart home display could help Apple expand its presence significantly in the specific category.
