Nandita Das supports anti-vaping mothers to fight modern tobacco devices

In a new and important event, ‘Mothers Against Vaping’, a united front of concerned mothers fighting against the promotion of modern tobacco devices such as e-cigarettes, vaporizers, electronic nicotine delivery systems, heat-free products, e-hookahs and similar devices among children and youth in India, today announced that actress-filmmaker and National Film Award winner Nandita Das will support and endorse their important cause.

Nandita Das joins the ranks of influential role models like Baichung Bhutia, Deepa Malik, Dutee Chand, Neha Dhupia, Kushboo Sundar and Kishwar Desai in supporting Mothers Against Vaping in their campaign against the growing menace of vaping among our children and youth.

Nandita’s support will be important in the fight against vaping among children and youth. Her influence will strengthen the work of Mothers Against Vaping, emphasizing the urgent need to address this health crisis and implement protective measures against the use of modern tobacco devices. Nandita’s advocacy will also catalyze broader public awareness and action to support a healthier future for our children and youth.

Joining the cause of Mothers Against Vaping, Nandita Das said, “The increasing use of modern, novel tobacco devices among our children and adolescents should be a matter of deep concern to all of us. As a mother of a teenager, I worry for all children and hope that they do not fall victim to such harmful addictions. This issue requires our immediate personal and collective attention. That is why I wholeheartedly support ‘Mothers Against Vaping’ in their efforts to combat the promotion of devices such as e-cigarettes, vaporizers and heat-not-burn products.”

“Today’s kids are intelligent and exposed to a lot of information. They are also vocal and rational. So we need to logically explain to them the dangers of such devices that may look attractive or ‘cool’. They can see the point if we engage with them constructively and compassionately. It is difficult to avoid peer pressure at their age, so we need to find ways to boost their confidence and equip them with the skills to make informed choices. Let’s support them in making healthy decisions,” Nandita added.

In honor of Nandita joining their mission, Mothers Against Vaping brought attention to a new danger for children and teens who vape. These children are now at increased risk of exposure to uranium and lead. This type of exposure to new-age tobacco devices like e-cigarettes, vaping devices, and other Heat Not Burn devices can damage the brain and affect brain development in children and teens.

Citing a recent study published in the journal Tobacco Control, Mothers Against Vaping highlighted findings linking vaping to elevated levels of uranium and lead exposure. The study examined urine samples from vapers for the presence of uranium, cadmium, and lead. The study also found increased levels of uranium in vapers who used sweet flavor categories. The report found 90 percent higher levels of uranium in vapers who preferred sweet flavors, such as fruit, chocolate, or desserts.

Growing evidence points to the harmful effects of modern tobacco device use among both children and adults. Unlike traditional cigarettes, which are typically smoked within minutes, these devices allow for longer sessions of use. The ultra-fine particles and chemicals found in the e-liquids of these devices pose a risk of chemical poisoning to users.
