Alpiq sells its Swiss photovoltaic assets

Alpiq has decided to sell seven of its rooftop photovoltaic installations in Switzerland with a total capacity of 5.5 MWp to PS Panneaux Solaires SA. This transaction is in line with Alpiq’s strategy to focus on its core activities, in particular the integration of renewable energy sources and energy flexibility solutions. In particular, the company has facilities in Spain. The facilities located in the cantons of Fribourg, Solothurn and Vaud will continue to produce 5.6 GWh of renewable energy per year under the management of PS Panneaux Solaires SA. By selling these assets, Alpiq strengthens its ability to focus on energy projects that offer greater flexibility and better meet security of supply requirements. The sale to PS Panneaux Solaires SA, operator of the Gefiswiss Energy Transition Fund, guarantees the continuity of solar energy production while aligning Alpiq’s activities with its core strategy.

Increasing efficiency and the challenge of flexibility

Photovoltaic capacity in Switzerland has grown significantly, increasing by almost 40% by 2023 to around 1,500 MW. This rapid growth creates challenges in terms of integration into the energy system, due to the intermittent nature of solar energy production. With its portfolio of flexible, mainly hydroelectric power plants, Alpiq is well-positioned to address these challenges. Amédée Murisier, Head of Switzerland at Alpiq, emphasizes that “our portfolio of highly flexible power plants makes a significant contribution to the flexibility of the energy system.”

Winter projects and safety improvements

Alpiq is implementing several projects to increase electricity production in winter. These include projects for Alpine photovoltaic power plants and new wind farms. These initiatives aim to increase the security of energy supply in winter and optimize the use of available resources. These projects include six Alpine photovoltaic power plants, five from the hydroelectric roundtable and three new wind farm projects. The focus on these initiatives shows Alpiq’s determination to invest in sustainable energy solutions and remain a key player in the development of the Swiss energy market.
