More than 9 billion Esim-enabled devices to ship worldwide by 2030: report

(MENAFN- IANS) New Delhi, July 5 (IANS) Global shipments of eSIM-enabled devices are estimated to cross 9 billion units between 2024 and 2030, growing at a CAGR of 22 per cent during the period, a new report released on Friday said.

According to Counterpoint Research, by 2030, almost 70 percent of all cellular devices shipped will support eSIM/iSIM technology and will be controlled by smartphones and IoT modules.

According to analysts, the industry passed a tipping point after the release of the US-only eSIM-only iPhone in 2022 and is now entering a period of hypergrowth.

“Key players in the ecosystem have started preparing for eSIM adoption beyond their flagship devices in the mid-range segments. The new eSIM-only iPad is another sign that the future belongs to eSIM,” said research analyst Siddhant Cally.

“Other use cases such as travel and roaming will also significantly help drive eSIM adoption in the short term,” he added.

Currently, smartphones enjoy the greatest interest among consumers thanks to eSIM support.

However, categories such as connected cars, gateways and routers, and drones, where managing physical SIM cards can be very difficult, can greatly benefit from eSIM or iSIM-based connectivity, the report said.

In the long term, eSIM will become the default standard for these industries, it added.

eSIM services are currently supported by over 400 operators worldwide, supporting an average of over 50 consumer devices.

Analysts further claim that by 2030, iSIM-enabled devices will constitute a significant part of the mobile device ecosystem.

“It is still very early days for iSIM. However, we expect iSIM adoption to gain momentum in the next three years. The technology has the potential to improve device performance by reducing cost, size and complexity,” said senior analyst Ankit Malhotra.

“This makes the solution ideal for use in a wide range of IoT applications, from smart home devices to industrial sensors,” he added.
