Egypt, UN strengthen renewable energy initiatives: NISGP meeting highlights joint efforts

The National Initiative for Smart Green Projects (NISGP) strengthened its cooperation with the United Nations in Egypt at a key meeting held in the administrative capital. The event, chaired by Ambassador Hisham Badr, Deputy Minister of Planning and Economic Development for Strategic Partnerships and National Coordinator of NISGP, together with Ms. Elena Panova, Resident Coordinator of the UN in Egypt, highlighted ongoing efforts to support sustainable development through innovative green initiatives.

Ambassador Badr highlighted the unwavering commitment of HE Dr. Hala El Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, in strengthening the strategic partnership between the NISGP and the UN. Underlining the global imperative to combat climate change, Ambassador Badr highlighted Egypt’s proactive stance under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi.

The event featured presentations from previous NISGP winners, highlighting progress in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture and environmental protection. Representatives from UN agencies pledged continued support to expand the initiative’s global impact, with the goal of empowering local communities and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Ambassador Badr highlighted the key role of UN agencies in Egypt, advocating for increased capacity for projects to attract investments through effective communication and strategic alignment with investor priorities. He reiterated NISGP’s commitment to expanding channels of cooperation with partners to accelerate the scalability of green projects.

Appreciating the crucial contribution of UNDP and other UN entities, the National Coordinator of the initiative considered the NISGP as a model recognized by international bodies, including the League of Arab States, that could be emulated in other countries.

Echoing Ambassador Badr’s sentiments, Ms. Elena Panova highlighted Egypt’s progress in sustainable development, attributing the success to community-based solutions and local engagement. She reaffirmed the UN’s unwavering support for Egypt’s climate initiatives, emphasizing the role of inclusive cooperation across sectors to achieve effective climate solutions.

The event featured several presentations of the 18 winning projects from the second round of the NISGP, presenting innovative approaches in various sectors aimed at achieving sustainable development.

UN agencies, including UNDP, WFP, UN Women, UNIDO, FAO, UN-Habitat, ILO, IOM and UNESCO, have reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Egypt’s green projects, promising technical expertise, funding and strategic partnerships to increase project impact and scalability.

In conclusion, Ambassador Badr expressed optimism about promoting sustainable development through co-innovation. He reaffirmed NISGP’s commitment to ongoing partnerships with the UN and international stakeholders to achieve lasting environmental impact.

The National Smart Green Project Initiative is currently accepting applications for its third round via sgg.eg, calling on participating entities to raise awareness and seize opportunities to support green projects.
