New Meta Quest 3 update adds Facebook-like social features and increases productivity

Meta continues its monthly update cycle for Meta Quest 3 with Horizon OS v67, which is now starting to roll out. After the comprehensive mixed reality improvements we’ve seen in recent months, this latest batch of updates is a bit more modest, but it does bring one big productivity improvement.

As we reported earlier when it launched in the v67 beta, all users will soon be able to rearrange 2D app windows in a more free-form way. You can have three app windows grouped in a classic hinged grouping, and another three that you can move around and leave floating in convenient places – you can see an example of this in the trailer below.

There’s also a new Theater View mode. Clicking a button on the panel’s control bar will automatically enlarge the size of the panel, bring it closer to you, and dim the surrounding area and other windows so you can focus on that one particular screen.

To enable this feature, you need to go to the experimental headset menu in the settings.

Plus, the Horizon Feed on your headset and in the Quest app will soon look a little more like a social media feed you might see on Threads or Facebook. You’ll be able to like and share posts from content creators, like images and VR experiences.

As usual, these improvements won’t reach everyone immediately, so keep an eye on the update page to find out when v67 will be available for download.

Video recording for unofficial reinforcement

If you weren’t impressed with v67, you might be excited to hear that Meta recently announced a more interesting software update – a partnership with LIV. LIV makes a VR capture tool for PCs that lets you record third-person video from VR apps.

LIV’s software already lets developers record VR games using a PC and an external camera. But with Meta’s help, it should add support for mixed reality experiences, as well as support for advanced features like hand tracking and dynamic occlusion – where virtual objects use depth sensors to know whether they should appear behind or in front of real-world objects.

Finally, the company plans to release a set of tools for creators in the coming weeks that will enable improved first-person video recording and third-person video recording without a computer.

There’s no exact release date for this latest feature, but if you’re into recording VR videos, it could be a major update to Quest’s existing tools, so it’s definitely worth keeping an eye on.
