Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL may get ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, Fold may still get optical sensor; details inside

Google is all set to unveil its Pixel 9 series devices in India next month. With weeks to go before the launch, a new report from Android Authority claims that the company could be introducing a significant change under the display that could solve a long-standing issue with the Pixel series devices. The company could be using an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner on the Pixel 9 lineup.

The change could help Google fix the reliability and slow performance of the fingerprint sensor in previous Pixel devices. Citing a source, the report said the unit could be the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Gen 2 (QFS4008), which is already used in the S24 Ultra. The search leader has switched to an in-display fingerprint sensor for the first time in Pixel 6 devices.

While the company has improved its reliability with subsequent updates, its performance is not up to par with its competitors. The company currently uses slower optical fingerprint scanners that users enable during the process. The report claims that the company may introduce an under-display fingerprint scanner on all devices except the upcoming Pixel Fold. The rumored book-style foldable phone is expected to have a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.

These devices are said to debut on August 13. The company said that it will showcase Google AI, Android software, and the Pixel lineup of devices at the event. As for expectations, the company could showcase four devices this time around that could be powered by the Tensor G4 chipset. The lineup could include the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Fold.
