European Energy receives Romanian approval for 500 MW renewable energy grid connection | Romanian investment news

European Energy plans to develop 1.5 GW of renewable energy capacity in Romania, it said in a press release. The company is currently in the process of obtaining grid connection permits for the remaining planned capacities.

“For us, Romania is a very attractive market. The auctions expected under the 5 GW renewable energy support program in Romania will accelerate the development of new wind and solar projects. However, we believe that the real potential of Romania is more than twice the capacity proposed in the program,” said Ioannis Kalapodas, head of European Energy’s Romanian office.

In March, the European Commission approved a €3 billion ($3.25 billion) Romanian state aid program to support onshore wind and photovoltaic installations, aimed at facilitating 5 GW of new renewable capacity. The support program includes two tender rounds. The first will take place in 2024 and finance 2 GW of green energy capacity, while the second round, which will finance 3 GW, will take place in 2025, the Romanian energy ministry said in March.

Founded in 2004, European Energy has a combined portfolio of 65 GW of renewable energy projects in 25 countries and employs over 700 people. The company opened a Romanian subsidiary in 2021.
