EU Commissioner Kadri Simson strengthens cooperation on renewable energy and hydrogen in Chile and Argentina

EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson aims to strengthen energy cooperation with Chile and Argentina this week, with a focus on renewable energy and hydrogen initiatives. Her visit underlines the EU’s commitment to promoting sustainable energy transformations worldwide.

In Santiago de Chile, Commissioner Simson will hold a series of bilateral meetings with key officials, including Energy Minister Diego Pardow Lorenzo and Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren. The discussions will also include José Miguel Benavente of CORFO and José Manuel Salázar-Xirinachs of ECLAC, highlighting opportunities for cooperation in the energy sector. The Commissioner will also meet with leaders of the Chilean renewable energy industry.

The highlight of her Chilean programme is her participation in the Global Gateway Investment Agenda – Team Europe Initiative RH2 Development Chile event, where she will deliver a keynote address and join a panel discussion on achieving a just energy transition and promoting green hydrogen. She will visit local energy projects, including the Euroclima-funded Smart Energy Monitoring Initiative for public buildings and the EU-backed solar panel project at Winery Santa Ema, aimed at increasing self-consumption of energy.

Moving to Buenos Aires, Commissioner Simson will co-chair the EU-Argentina High-Level Energy Dialogue with Energy Secretary Eduardo Rodríguez Chirillo, which will focus on cooperation strategies to advance the energy transition and the deployment of green hydrogen technologies. She will also participate in discussions at the German-Argentine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, focusing on joint efforts towards sustainable energy development.

During her visit to Argentina, Commissioner Simson will hold bilateral meetings with Minister of Finance Luis Caputo and Minister of Foreign Affairs Diana Mondino, discussing mutual energy interests and exploring opportunities for deeper cooperation. She will visit the Sustenta-Vitis sustainable development project, supported by AL INVEST Verde, highlighting the EU’s contribution to sustainable development in Argentina.

Commissioner Simson’s diplomatic mission underlines the EU’s proactive approach to supporting international partnerships and promoting sustainable energy solutions worldwide, contributing to global efforts to achieve climate neutrality and the Sustainable Development Goals.
