Germany and Morocco form strategic climate and energy alliance

  • Supporting renewable energy sources:Germany and Morocco pledge to expand renewable energy and green hydrogen production.
  • Strategic partnerships:The cooperation aims to solve problems related to adaptation to climate change and promote economic cooperation.
  • Long-term security:Focus on promoting regional stability through sustainable energy initiatives.

Germany and Morocco have formed a new climate and energy alliance to work together on climate protection and energy transition. This alliance, marked by the signing of a declaration in Berlin, aims to strengthen cooperation on climate change adaptation, the expansion of renewable energy sources and the production of green hydrogen.

Key initiatives

German Federal Minister of Development Svenja Schulze highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating:Morocco has the best conditions for energy transformation and green hydrogen production. Germany wants to import hydrogen.

Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita stressed the strategic importance of the alliance, noting:Germany occupies a very special position… as an economic partner, as a trade partner, but of course also as a political partner.

Strategic dialogue

The partnership was formalized during the first session of the German-Moroccan strategic dialogue, which included discussions on mitigating the climate crisis, migration and regional security. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock emphasized the importance of regional cooperation: “Long-term security is only possible with partners. Isolation is the enemy of security.

Hydrogen economy

The German Ministry of Economic Affairs Secretary Stefan Wenzel presented a plan to support cooperation in electricity trade between Morocco and the EU, involving German technology companies and suppliers. He stated:We want to do this fairly and in partnership, so that Morocco can also continue its energy transition and obtain its fair share of future value chains.

Since 2012, Germany has provided subsidized loans worth more than €1 billion to support renewable energy in Morocco. Part of this funding has gone towards building the world’s largest solar power plant in Ouarzazate, which is expected to produce around 10,000 tons of hydrogen per year by 2028 or 2029.

Regional stability

In the broader context of the Middle East conflict, both countries have warned of escalation and urged acceptance of Biden’s ceasefire plan. Baerbock noted:This is the only real way out of the dead end of war.

This alliance is an important step towards sustainable energy and regional stability, showing that Morocco is a reliable partner of Europe in the region.
