! Murcia Today – Will Labour government reverse Brexit rules for Britons in Spain?

Publication date: 05/07/2024

What awaits Britons living in Spain and the EU following a Labour victory in the UK elections?

Keir Starmer’s Labour Party has won what was expected to be a landslide victory in the UK general election, ousting the Conservatives after 14 years in power during which they presided over arguably the most influential decision to affect Britain and British people around the world in the past 80 years – Brexit.

In addition, after Brexit, British citizens will be covered by new rules on travel in Europe that will apply to non-EU citizens. These rules will include the need to purchase a €7 visa-free visa to enter Spain. These rules will come into effect next year.

While the Conservatives “delivered Brexit” and Sir Kier Starmer said after his victory: “Change starts now”, the current Labour party, which has just taken power, has shown no sign of addressing the Brexit issues that further complicate life and relationships between the UK and Europe.

Neither the campaign to rejoin the EU nor any mention of joining the customs union after Brexit featured in the Labour manifesto. They undoubtedly tried to play it safe during the election campaign, taking care not to upset potential voters and not to jeopardise their convincing lead.

Despite all this, the belief is that the latest Labour government will pursue a more centrist policy and is unlikely to bring any radical changes to the impact of Brexit on UK citizens living in, travelling to or owning property in Europe.

Another British community close to Spain that has been significantly impacted by Brexit and the general election result is Gibraltar, a British overseas territory that shares a land border with southern Spain.

Long-term negotiations are still ongoing following the 2019 Brexit to finalise Gibraltar’s potential special relationship with the EU, including who will control the security of the border between Gibraltar and Spain, as well as how trade and the free movement of people across the border will work.

All eyes will be on the new Foreign Minister who will lead the negotiations.
