Belgian steel wire company signs virtual PPA for wind farm in Romania

Steel wire producer NV Bekaert has secured 100 GWh from a wind farm in Romania under a power purchase agreement.

Headquartered in Belgium, NV Bekaert employs 28,000 people in 45 countries worldwide.

The company said it has signed a 10-year virtual power purchase agreement (vPPA) in Romania with First Looks Solutions SRL, a project company founded by Rezolv Energy.

According to Bekaert, this is one of the largest PPAs ever concluded in the region.

The launch of the Vifor wind farm is planned for the end of 2025.

Thanks to the 100 GWh of additional renewable energy per year, annual emissions will be reduced by more than 41,000 tons of CO2, the company added. The energy will come from the Vifor wind farm project, developed by Rezolv and Low Carbon in Buzău County, northeast of the capital Bucharest.

It is worth noting that three weeks ago Rezolv Energy and Low Carbon received a loan package of up to EUR 291 million to support the construction of the first phase of the Vifor wind farm.

The first phase is expected to have a capacity of 192 MW. The wind farm is expected to be operational by the end of 2025. Full capacity, 461 MW, will be achieved in Phase 2. Rezolv stressed that once fully operational, Vifor will be one of the largest onshore wind farms in Europe.

Rezolv: Phase 2 of Vifor project will help us further meet the widespread demand for clean energy from businesses

Bekart said the PPA represents a new milestone in the sustainability strategy of Creating a Better Tomorrow. According to Michael Hamilton, vice president of commodities, the agreement not only strengthens the renewable energy portfolio but also exemplifies the commitment to sustainability.

Alastair Hammond, CEO of Rezolv Energy, said Bekaert is enabling the first phase of the Vifor project. “Phase 2 will help us meet even greater widespread corporate demand for clean energy,” he said.
