World Bank Strengthens Engagement in Cambodia’s Organic and Agricultural Sector

Phnom Penh, July 4, 2024 – The World Bank has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Cambodia’s green environment and agricultural development initiatives. Anna Wellenstein, Regional Director for East Asia and the Pacific in the World Bank’s Sustainable Development Group, met on July 3 with Dr. Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, and Dith Tina, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, to discuss ongoing and future cooperation.

In her discussion with Dr. Eang Sophalleth, Wellenstein pledged to assist the Ministry of Environment in implementing the Chakra Strategy on the Environment. This includes significant support for the Cambodia Sustainable Landscape and Ecotourism Project (CSLEP). Dr. Sophalleth praised the World Bank’s efforts to improve environmental management in Cambodia, particularly in the areas of solid waste and plastics.

In a separate meeting with Dith Tina, Wellenstein praised the effective cooperation between the World Bank and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in promoting progress in agriculture. Minister Tina emphasized that the ministry is focused on increasing food security and supporting a sustainable local economy through a modern agricultural community initiative. This program aims to expand agricultural production at the grassroots level while ensuring sustainable use of natural resources.

These meetings highlight the ongoing cooperation between Cambodia and the World Bank in supporting sustainable development and environmental protection.
