FANR showcases UAE capacity building in nuclear regulatory sector at IAEA international conference

VIENNA, July 3, 2024 (YOU) — United Arab Emirates Federal Nuclear Regulatory Authority participates in International Conference on Nuclear Knowledge Management and Human Resource Developmentwhich is organized by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) from 1 to 5 July at its headquarters in Vienna, Austria.

The objectives of the conference are to review global achievements in nuclear knowledge management and human resource development; to consider current and future challenges and opportunities; to provide participants with practical solutions that they can use at the organizational, national and international levels; and to develop and retain the human resources needed to support safe and sustainable nuclear energy programs.

It has developed and implemented various capacity building programs to ensure that the Emiratis are equipped with the necessary talents and competencies required to safely operate its nuclear power plant. We are proud to say that UAE employs almost 20,000 workers in the nuclear and radiation sectors, reflecting the enormous efforts made by the country in recent years. Over the course of five days, the conference will cover a variety of topics, including nuclear energy policy and its impact on knowledge and human resource management, engaging youth through global collaboration, and workforce development and safety culture.

During the conference, FANR will present two technical presentations that will highlight its sound regulatory practices to build capacity in the nuclear sector: the first presentation will be on the Irshaad Youth Programme, which is a mentoring programme aimed at supporting the learning and development of FANR employees by assigning a mentor from the senior management team to coach the young employees on their career path. The second technical presentation will be on the Iqrab W Ta’alam Session Presentation, which is an e-learning introductory programme aimed at orienting new FANR employees on the core business and operations to equip them with the knowledge needed to integrate into the organisation.

In addition, FANR will present two posters highlighting its capacity-building efforts, such as the development of an Individual Development Plan that identifies staff competency needs and training requirements. The second poster focuses on the results UAE The student hackathon that FANR organized last year under the slogan “Nuclear Science for Environmental Sustainability and Combating Climate Change” was attended by 30 students from six universities around the world. UAE took part in exploring the potential of nuclear energy and radiation science to address environmental sustainability and climate change challenges.

In addition, FANR took part in Plenary panel on “Leadership and Sustaining the Knowledge Base in a Rapidly Changing Nuclear Landscape.” AlMur shared his insights on UAE strategies and success in developing leadership and maintaining a solid knowledge base in the nuclear sector. The panel highlighted the importance of adaptive leadership and innovative knowledge management approaches in ensuring the sustainability and safety of nuclear power programs.
