Trade: Retail sales volume and value growth in May

In May 2024, a positive economic change is estimated in both the value and volume of retail sales (+0.4% and +0.2%, respectively). Here’s what the report showsIstat in retail trade in May. Food sales are growing (+1.1 percent in value and +0.8 percent in volume), while non-food sales are falling (-0.2 percent in value and volume).

In the March-May 2024 quarter, in economic terms, retail sales are up in value (+0.1%) and down in volume (-0.1%), similar to food sales, while non-food sales are flat in value and down slightly in volume (-0.1%). Based on the trend, since May 2024, retail sales are up 0.4% in value and down 0.8% in volume.

Food sales are up 1.4% in value and down 0.8% in volume, while non-food sales are down in both value and volume (-0.3% and -0.8% respectively). Non-food sales have seen mixed trends across product groups.

The largest increase was observed in photographs and optical films, magnetic media, musical instruments (+3.4%) and perfumery products, personal care (+3.2%), while the largest decrease was recorded in the case of household appliances, radios, televisions and tape recorders (-6.2%). Compared to May 2023, the value of retail sales is increasing in the case of large-scale distribution (+0.9%) and companies operating in small areas (+0.2%), while it is decreasing in the case of retail sales outside stores (-1.6%) and e-commerce (-1.4%).
