MDEC’S E-COMMERCE PROGRAMS HAVE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE LIVES OF ENTREPRENEURS

KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 (Bernama) – E-commerce entrepreneurship development programmes conducted by several ministries have had a positive impact on participants and made a significant difference in their lives.

Beauty entrepreneur Nilawati Degom, 40, said joining the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) programme run under the Ministry of Digital Affairs helped her expand her home-based business into her own beauty salon, unlike her who was unable to generate enough sales before joining the programme as she lacked the right business management skills.

“When I joined the program, I learned how to manage business, finances, and online marketing methods, and then I started getting results. All this time, I had talent in the beauty industry, but I lacked the skills to promote myself.

“Now, the sales of my beauty centre and my products have increased. My life has completely changed, I am so grateful that I have my own beauty centre in Bintulu, Sarawak,” she said when contacted by Bernama.

Meanwhile, seamstress and bridal boutique owner Nur Ummiumaira Azmi, 22, from Kepala Batas in Penang said she was grateful that she was able to join the programme at such a young age as she recently managed to open her second boutique.

“I started my business without any knowledge, armed only with my tailoring skills. After joining more classes from 2022, my tailoring business improved and now I am expanding my business to own a bridal boutique,” she said.

Another participant, songkok entrepreneur Asmidar Liatee Azhar, 36, admitted that he had not previously focused on social media but decided to change his approach after seeing the profits it could bring.

“After joining the program, my sales (online and in-store) increased by 100 percent. I learned a lot, including how to sell online and how to be more confident selling live on TikTok.

“I already have two stores this year, one in Shah Alam, Selangor and the other at home in Kemaman, Terengganu, after joining MDEC’s e-commerce programme,” she said, expressing hope for further growth of her business.

The Auditor General’s 2024 Report Series, presented in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday, showed that e-commerce entrepreneurship development programmes were implemented well and exceeded set targets.

The programmes were implemented jointly by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Digital Affairs, the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development and the Ministry of Entrepreneurship and Cooperative Development.
