Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland welcomes new chairman

Colin Briggs joins Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland as Chair of Scotland’s largest health charity. Colin is currently Director of Strategic Planning for NHS Lothian.

Colin has 24 years of NHS management experience, including 15 years in hospital and GP practice management. In addition to his NHS roles, he has been Chairman of Penumbra Mental Health for over two years.

Speaking about his appointment, Colin said: “I have always been very aware of the importance of public service and this motivated me to pursue a career in the public sector as well.”

In addition to his extensive professional experience in the healthcare sector, Colin has personal experience of the conditions treated by CHSS.

He explained: “My maternal grandmother had a stroke at the age of 53, which left her with no motor skills.

“My other grandmother suffered from COPD in the last years of her life, and a very good friend of mine has long COVID-19.

“I have been incredibly impressed with the innovation that CHSS is bringing to the table, providing support services and tailored resources to help people manage their health on their own.”

Working in NHS Lothian Colin saw first-hand what the third sector can do for people.

He said: “When an organisation like CHSS has a certain level of influence in the sector it is really important and can open doors. I am keen to help Jane-Claire and the team do more of what they are good at.

“The third sector can be much more innovative and creative, and that appeals to me. For example, the work on self-management that CHSS is doing will be crucial for prevention and recovery.

“Taking on the role of chair seems like a really good fit for me. CHSS is full of staff and volunteers who are professional and capable, which is really inspiring. I’ve been impressed so far. I can’t wait to get started.”

Jane-Claire Judson, Chief Executive of Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland, said: “We are delighted to welcome Colin Briggs as the new Chair of the Trust Board.

“Colin joins CHSS at an exciting time as we deliver the second phase of our No Life Half Lived strategy, which aims to support 175,000 people a year by 2028 through our model of self-governance and community regeneration.

“Colin brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience across health services, strategic planning and service delivery, which will benefit us as we deliver on our goals of supporting the 1 in 5 people in Scotland with chest, heart, stroke and long COVID conditions to live their lives to the full.”
