Google Pixel 9 will finally get an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor

Google has managed to address some of the issues that plagued Pixel devices over time. Now, the upcoming Google Pixel 9 series aims to address another persistent issue, the somewhat slow and sometimes unreliable under-display fingerprint sensor. Google is set to implement an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner in its upcoming Pixel 9 series, Android Authority reported, citing a source familiar with the development. The Pixel line currently uses optical fingerprint sensors.

Google Pixel phones have been plagued with a number of recurring issues over the years. Notable ones include outdated camera sensors, extremely slow charging, no ultra-wide camera, and inconsistent bezel sizes.

Qualcomm 3D Sonic Gen 2 (QFS4008) fingerprint sensor, which is also found in the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra (read our full Galaxy S24 Ultra review here), will be integrated into all Google Pixel 9 models. However, the Pixel Fold will retain the fingerprint sensor in the power button.

This year’s Made by Google event is scheduled for August 13, 2024 at 10:00 AM PST or 10:30 PM IDT. The event, which will be held at the Googleplex in Mountain View, California, will be available to stream on the Google Store website and the Google YouTube channel.

Pixel 9 gets new pink color

Fresh leaks of the much-anticipated Google Pixel 9 have surfaced online, with an unsolicited source in Algeria sharing a video of what appears to be a functional Pixel 9 device in a pretty pink color. The leaked footage shows the Pixel 9 in a stunning new color variant, allegedly named “Peony” after the vibrant flower. This soft pink hue adds a fresh option to Google’s typically muted color palette used on Pixel phones.

Google Pixel 9 Specs and Features (Expected)

It’s worth noting that the leaked Pixel 9 has 256GB of storage, suggesting that it could be a fully functional unit and not just a prototype. The revelation has also fueled speculation about improved hardware offerings in the upcoming Pixel 9 series. Previous rumors have suggested significant improvements to the base Pixel 9 model, including an increase to 12GB of RAM — a significant improvement over the 8GB in previous iterations. This increase in memory could drastically improve multitasking capabilities and overall performance.

The Pixel 9 series will be powered by Google’s proprietary next-generation Tensor G4 chipset. The G4 is expected to offer improved AI capabilities, faster performance, and increased power efficiency over its predecessors. As expectations grow, the source of these leaks, Hani Mohamed Bioud, has promised to reveal more details soon.

Google has officially announced that the Pixel 9 series and Pixel Watch 3 will be unveiled on August 13, earlier than their traditional October release date. This year’s event will take place at Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California, marking a departure from its usual New York City location. Google typically holds its annual Pixel launch event in October, but this year, the company changed its tune and announced a surprise Pixel event scheduled for August 13, nearly two months ahead of schedule.
