Sungrow recently signed an agreement with Atlas Renewable Energy to utilize Sungrow’s PowerTitan liquid coolant storage system for the 200 MW/880 MWh BESS del Desierto project.

Once completed, the plant will significantly alleviate energy constraints in northern Chile, increase regional energy reliability and contribute to the goal of 100% clean energy by 2050.

Located in the Atacama Desert, BESS del Desierto faces a unique challenge: its abundant photovoltaic resources cannot be fully transported to the main consumption area, which is 1,500 kilometers away, due to grid load constraints. Atlas Renewable Energy is poised to build Chile’s largest large-scale stand-alone energy storage plant, which will capture excess solar energy during the day and seamlessly integrate it into the grid when load allows.

This innovative approach will increase the flexibility and sustainability of regional energy consumption. Atlas predicts that around 280 GWh of additional electricity will be added to the grid each year, effectively easing constraints in Chile.

The Atacama Desert offers harsh conditions, including heavy dust and extreme temperature fluctuations exceeding 30℃. To ensure the long-term stability of the BESS del Desierto, PowerTitan offers C5 corrosion resistance, IP65 protection against wind and sand, intelligent liquid cooling, and an intelligent O&M system, ensuring optimal temperature control and stability.

In addition, Sungrow uses advanced grid forming technology to deliver millisecond-level active and reactive power response, frequency modulation, voltage regulation, and harmonic suppression. This helps stabilize power grids by actively increasing local grid strength, solving the challenges of long-distance and complex grid control, and providing Chile with a more stable power supply.

“BESS del Desierto is Atlas’ first energy storage station and a key milestone in our entry into the energy storage sector. It represents a significant strategic effort to efficiently leverage solar energy resources to increase energy reliability in Latin America. We are excited to take this step forward with our long-standing partner, Sungrow,” said Patrick Valentin, Head of Strategic Sourcing at Atlas Renewable Energy.
