“Skill Acquisition is Key to Solving Unemployment in Nigeria”

Lions International laments daily the rising level of unemployment in the country.

To address this, efforts to address youth unemployment in the country must start with providing skilling and empowerment programmes that will make a difference in people’s lives.

The 404-A4 District Governor, Lion Osadebamwen Okoro, during a press conference titled “Welcome Aboard” in Benin said the fight against youth unrest triggered by the alarming unemployment in the country would become a thing of the past if the society focused on youth empowerment and skilling for the growing number of unemployed and youthful people.

This highlighted area of focus, which aligns with the organization’s mission to enhance and improve health and well-being, strengthen communities, and support those in need through humanitarian services that impact lives, will come to the forefront with his assumption of office as District Governor of District 404-A4.

He said that as the district governor, his main focus was to focus on the youth, especially providing them with development opportunities and skill acquisition programmes in order to reduce the unemployment crisis that was plaguing the country.
Okoro said: “We cannot leave the youth on the streets. By doing so, we will lead to more crime and criminality in our society. If we engage the youth positively, it means they will be busy and start thinking of meaningful things to do with their time and energy.

“We can’t start feeding the youth on the streets of Benin. We want to teach them how to feed themselves. That’s why we started building a youth center and a skills center in Benin so that at the end of the day they are busy with themselves.

Okoro, who lamented the rising unemployment in the country, said Lions International helps young people by providing them with development opportunities and skill acquisition programmes.
He added that thanks to training in vocational education centres, young people can take care of themselves and, consequently, their families, which ultimately translates into caring for society.
