Government buildings to achieve full rooftop solar coverage by 2025, ET EnergyWorld

New Delhi: In a significant step towards adopting renewable energy, the central government has committed to equipping all central government buildings with rooftop solar installations by the end of 2025. The initiative, a part of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, includes an allocation of Rs 75,021 crore to enhance solar capacity and enable energy self-sufficiency across government sectors. The project, which was launched on February 29, 2024, and formal administrative approval was given on March 16, aims to make rooftop spaces technically feasible across government domains, including ministries, departments and subordinate offices. Implementation methods such as RESCO or capex models are encouraged, focusing on automation and data-driven management to streamline contract enforcement and monitoring, thereby reducing administrative costs.

Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) with experience in renewable projects will play a key role in helping departments implement the initiative quickly. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is tasked with overseeing and successfully implementing the initiative, ensuring that the target of full rooftop saturation is achieved by the planned deadline of 2025.

This strategic move aims to not only reduce the consumption of conventional energy sources and carbon dioxide emissions but also make the government a leader in implementing green energy practices.
