Sir Keir Starmer is speaking in the Downing Street Chamber and begins his short speech by giving us details of his government’s first Cabinet meeting, which took place this morning.

He claims he told his ministers “exactly” what he expected of them.

The new prime minister said he had spoken to the government’s standards adviser to “discuss how we can deliver our goals across government”.

Sir Keir said that while his Cabinet had now been fully appointed, he intended to continue appointing junior ministers in the coming days.

As he reveals, the cabinet discussed “establishing mission implementation councils to implement the necessary changes.”

The new prime minister claims to have a majority in England, Wales and Scotland, giving him a mandate for “all four corners of the United Kingdom”.

He is announcing a victory lap in the UK, saying he will visit all four nations of the UK, starting tomorrow in Scotland, then Northern Ireland, Wales and finally returning to England.

Sir Keir said his next step would be to meet with metro mayors of different political views.

On Tuesday he will go to Washington for the NATO summit.

Concluding his speech, Sir Keir states that “self-interest is yesterday’s politics” – and that he wants “policies and a country that work for him”.
