India takes steps worth Rs 200 Cr to boost green hydrogen testing facilities

Backed by an amount of Rs 200 crore, a new set of guidelines to strengthen testing facilities, infrastructure and institutional support has been unveiled by the Ministry of Environment and Renewable Energy. The initiative is part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission and reflects the country’s commitment to building a strong quality and regulatory framework for the Green Hydrogen (GH2) sector. One of its objectives is to help set up new testing facilities and upgrade existing ones.

According to a press release from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the programme guidelines, announced on Thursday, focus on identifying and addressing gaps in existing testing facilities for components, technologies and processes across the GH2 value chain. The investment will help India create a robust framework of safety standards required for sustainable and reliable production and trade of GH2.

As the implementing agency for the program, the National Institute for Solar Energy (NISE) will oversee the allocation of funds and ensure compliance with the program objectives.

This initiative is in line with India’s broader goal of achieving Aatma Nirbhar Bharat (Self-reliant India) through clean energy solutions and becoming a global pioneer in the clean energy transition.

As per a press release, the National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched on January 4, 2023, aims to deploy Rs 19,744 crores by fiscal year 2029-30.

This ambitious initiative aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions, reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports and strengthen India’s position in both technology and market in the GH2 sector.
