The first in-person meeting of the UN Secretary-General’s Panel on Critical Minerals for Energy Transition will take place in Copenhagen on 8-9 July.

Due to the ever-increasing demand for minerals essential for renewable energy technologies. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to designateed. a Panel on Critical Minerals for Energy Transition in April 2024, using the convening powers of the United Nations to bring together a diverse group of governments and other stakeholders from across the mineral value chain to develop a set of common and voluntary global principles to protect environmental and social standards and address equity in the energy transition.

The Secretary-General’s Panel on Critical Minerals for the Energy Transition aims to: build trust between governments, local communities and industry by addressing issues related to equality, transparency, investment, sustainable development and human rightsIt builds on existing standards and initiatives.

Limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius to prevent the worst impacts of climate change will depend on sufficient, reliable and affordable supplies of key energy transition minerals such as copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt and rare earth elements, which are essential ingredients for clean energy technologies – from wind turbines and solar panels to electric vehicles and battery storage.

The panel is co-chaired by: South African Ambassador Nozipho Joyce Mxakato-Diseko and Ms Ditte Juul Jørgensen, Director-General for Energy of the European CommissionIt is composed of 39 members, including governments (US, China, EU, UK and many others), as well as industry, civil society, indigenous peoples and youth representatives.
