Surplus renewable energy is now stored in the SaskPower battery system

SaskPower’s first ever utility-scale battery power system is now live.

The system — called BESS — is located at SaskPower’s Fleet Street substation in Regina. It stores excess renewable energy until it’s needed.

BESS has the capacity to deliver 20 megawatts (MW) of energy to the grid, enough to power 20,000 homes for one hour.

BESS provides greater flexibility to the provincial grid and supports state-owned corporations’ efforts to achieve net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Battery storage has greater flexibility and can respond more quickly to short-term power fluctuations than some conventional grid generation units. BESS will be used when demand increases for short periods of time.
