Fiji is well on track to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 7, which aims to ensure that every Fijian has access to affordable, reliable and sustainable energy.

This assurance was made by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Trade, Cooperatives, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises Manoa Kamikamica.

Kamikamica says Fiji aims to achieve 75 per cent of the SDG7 target by 2030.

“There are about four to five major companies in Fiji that are already looking at renewable energy and selling to the grid. One major hydroelectric project and about four to five major solar projects. Google is actually building a data center in the West. Their data center will be solar powered and they’re looking to sell to the grid.”

Kamikamica says the government must remain focused on the energy transformation path to achieve its mission goal.

He added that the government has also taken significant steps to ensure the protection and preservation of the environment, including by establishing a landfill site, which will help improve waste management in the country.

Kamikamica says the government’s actions have been complemented by the recently launched ten-year National Sustainable Tourism Framework.
