Pentagon extends $25 million green energy contract with 5 companies

The Defense Department has named five companies — two private, three publicly traded — that will participate in a fourth-year extension option on a multiple indefinite-quantity/indefinite-delivery, fixed-price contract and share $25 million for their work. The option will now make the base contract worth $200 million and will run through February 2015.

The contract in question provides for the delivery of renewable electricity through power purchase agreements on Naval and Marine Corps installations within the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest area of responsibility (AOR)—specifically, California and Arizona. Engaged contractors will bid on orders to generate and sell power from renewable energy systems that are built, owned, operated, and maintained by the contractor on government property located on the installations to be delivered.

The winners of this contract included the following public companies:

  • NRG Energy

  • Chevron

  • AND SunEdison

The group also includes privately held companies Solarstar California XV and SunDurance Energy, LLC.
