Transformer arrives at BESS project in New South Wales

ParticipationParticipation

Origin Energy has achieved a significant milestone in the construction of its large-scale battery at Eraring Power Station.

A custom-made 210-ton transformer is a key part of the project, designed to boost the energy stored in the battery to high voltage that can be transmitted via the power grid.

The transformer is approximately 9 m long and 3 m wide and its rated power is 285 MVA.

The successful transport of the transformer was a significant logistical achievement, covering almost 60km from Mayfield Harbour to Eraring Power Station. This was achieved using two block trucks pulling a 16-axle flatbed, with an additional dolly at the rear for extra support.

Upon arrival at the Eraring project site, cranes safely unloaded the transformer to its designated location at the battery substation. A second identical unit is scheduled to arrive by the end of July 2024.

The first phase of the large-scale battery project at Eraring is more than halfway complete. Major earthworks are almost complete and detailed construction is progressing. Excavation and laying of underground service pipes are underway and mechanical equipment is currently being delivered.

In the first stage of the project, two transformers will be connected to the National Power Grid.

In addition to the transformers, the Eraring battery storage system will include 840 battery enclosures and 140 inverters that will jointly manage the charging and discharging processes.

The first phase of the Eraring battery involves building a 460-megawatt energy storage system with a dispatch time of two hours. The $600 million battery is expected to be operational by late 2025.

Eraring is a strategic location for the battery due to its high-quality connection infrastructure, enabling the delivery of stored energy to demand centres.

The development of the Eraring battery is a key next step in Origin’s efforts to transform the Eraring power station into a future-proof facility.
