Thank You: Dickinson County Supervisors See Benefits of Red Rock Wind Energy Center

After months of deliberation and teamwork, the Dickinson County Board of Supervisors passed enforceable updates to the county’s wind energy ordinance. The county has developed a clear and enforceable policy that protects the interests of residents and the natural resources of northwest Iowa. It’s a difficult task, but the supervisors have accomplished it while ensuring that the Lakes area can benefit economically from renewable energy development.

We thank the Dickinson County Board of Supervisors for their commitment to making decisions that best represent the community.

While there are elements of the ordinance that could make it more feasible to invest in wind development in Dickinson County, we understand that an ordinance like this requires compromise and, most importantly, consideration of all perspectives. We appreciate the opportunity to share our perspective over the past few months. We respect the proposed ordinance amendment as the culmination of a thoughtful, inclusive, and transparent process.

Development of renewable energy, e.g. Invenergy Red Rock Wind Energy Center offers a wide range of opportunities. Over the life of the project, Red Rock is expected to generate more than $241 million in tax revenue and land lease payments. These funds will support family farms, community development projects, infrastructure and public schools.

Invenergy believes in putting community first. We have planted roots in Dickinson County, opening our Red Rock office in the heart of Spirit Lake. It is a place to talk and answer questions from residents about the project. That is why We incorporated community feedback into the design by excluding land from the original plan to address DNR concerns and land use issues.

As part of the community, we believe in paying it forward to groups and organizations that make Dickinson County a better place. Invenergy has already partnered with Dickinson County EMS Association Educational Programs to provide new training equipment for those training. This is just the beginning.

The Iowa Great Lakes region is a special place and we are honored to be a part of it in a meaningful way. The key to keeping a community strong is growing it, and we are committed to being the best neighbors we can be.

We are grateful for the community’s support and look forward to continuing to work together to strengthen Dickinson, Emmet, and Clay Counties.
