Danish investment group takes over Japanese solar portfolio

Danish company Obton A/S and international investment firm GSSG Solar have jointly acquired a portfolio of nine Japanese solar parks.

The acquisition propels Danish investment group Obton into the top 10 solar park operators in Japan, the company said in a press release.

The newly acquired portfolio consists of eight photovoltaic farms already in operation, while a 13 MW project is under implementation.

The solar farms are part of Japan’s feed-in tariff program and will provide green energy to about 30,000 households once the last project is completed.

This is not the first time Obton and GSSG Solar have done business together. Obton previously bought GSSG Solar’s largest solar farm, 82 MW, located in Fukushima.

According to Mikkel Berthelsen, Purchasing Director at Obton A/S, this latest acquisition strengthens the strong and valuable partnership with GSSG Solar.

“We are pursuing an ambitious strategy to expand our portfolio in Japan, and this agreement helps strengthen our partnership with GSSG. It will be exciting to see where our collaboration can take us in the future,” he says.

Ownership of the portfolio is split 51% between Obton A/S and 49% between CSSG Solar. However, there is a key difference between this transaction and previous ones. While Obton has previously always sold projects to funds owned by investors in Obton Forvaltning A/S, this time the plan is for Obton A/S to retain ownership.

Obton is a Danish investment firm that focuses on renewable energy projects and the acquisition of solar and battery storage projects, primarily in Europe, Asia Pacific and Canada through 11 funds.
