The Zanzibar government has unveiled new regulations for non-hotel tourist accommodation in response to the growing popularity of private residences as holiday accommodation. Tourism Minister Mudrick Ramadhani Soraga announced the guidelines at a stakeholders’ meeting on 4 July 2024.

Under the new regulations, all accommodation providers must register with the Zanzibar Tourism Commission and obtain a license after an inspection. Registration fees vary by region, with Mjini Magharibi costing 150,000 shillings and other areas 250,000 shillings (approx. £44-£47).

The regulations apply to both residents and the diaspora. Licensed properties must meet business standards, and licenses can be revoked for violations. Penalties for non-compliance include fines of up to $5,000 (approx. £3,905) or imprisonment for three months to five years.
