Severn Trent Green Power to build three large solar farms

Severn Trent Green Power (STGP), a UK-based renewable energy company, is planning to build three new large-scale solar farms, with the option of a fourth.

By finalizing a development rights agreement with leading international solar company, Elgin Energy, STGP will transform its total renewable energy production from around 350 GWh/year to around 500 GWh/year (electric equivalent). The three solar farms will add around 150 GWh of generating capacity to the national grid, rising to over 185 GWh once the fourth comes online – enough energy to provide electricity to around 70,000 homes for a full year.

The company currently operates 33 solar panels generating 16 GWh/yr. This increase is expected to occur over the next two years as development of each site continues.

This project demonstrates Green Power’s continued strategic commitment to developing a diverse renewable energy portfolio.

Farryad Ishaq, Director of Strategy and Business Development, said: “While anaerobic digestion remains our core business, we see significant potential in solar, wind and hydropower. This agreement represents a major step forward in our ambition to drive the UK towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.”

The agreement grants rights to implement the STGP project in areas in three counties:

  • Leicestershire.
  • Warwick County.
  • North Yorkshire.

A fourth site in Shropshire is likely to be added at a later date.

These strategically selected locations provide suitable conditions for optimal solar energy production, providing a significant and new sustainable energy source that can be fed into the National Grid.

The projects are described as “construction ready” and include grid agreements, planning consents and land leases, allowing STGP to build, own and operate a solar farm at each location, a proven track record for the company.

The transaction further strengthens STGP’s position not only as a leading anaerobic digestion company, but also as an emerging force in the renewables market with a diverse portfolio of assets managed on behalf of its parent company, Severn Trent Plc.

Ronan Kilduff, CEO of Elgin, added: “We are proud to support Severn Trent Green Power in its ambitious move towards a diverse renewable energy portfolio. This partnership embodies our shared commitment to a low-carbon future and together we will help the world become climate neutral by 2050.”
