US approves Atlantic Shores South Wind project, boosts clean energy goals

WASHINGTON — The Interior Department recently greenlit the Atlantic Shores South offshore wind project, marking the ninth commercial-scale wind project approved by the Biden administration. The approval brings the total approved offshore wind capacity to more than 13 gigawatts, enough to power nearly five million homes.

The Drive for Clean Energy

“The Biden-Harris Administration is building momentum every day for our clean energy future,” said Secretary Deb Haaland. She emphasized that this milestone is consistent with the Administration’s goal of deploying 30 gigawatts of offshore energy by 2030. This vision is part of a broader strategy to address climate change, support job growth and promote equal economic opportunity.

Under President Biden, the United States has rapidly expanded its offshore wind capacity. In just three years, the Administration has overseen the approval of more than 13 gigawatts of offshore wind projects, creating jobs and clean energy for millions of homes. “The approval of an offshore wind project that has a labor agreement with six unions in New Jersey reflects the win-win opportunities we are pursuing to benefit local workers and communities,” said Ali Zaidi, National Climate Advisor.

Expanding the reach of offshore wind energy

Since the start of the Biden-Harris Administration, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has completed four offshore wind lease transactions. These include areas offshore New York, New Jersey, the Carolinas, and the first-ever offshore wind sales off the Pacific and Gulf Coasts. The department also announced plans for up to 12 additional lease transactions through 2028.

Atlantic Shores South Project Details

The Atlantic Shores South project consists of two wind farms—Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind Project 1 and 2—and associated export cables. Together, these wind farms are expected to generate up to 2,800 megawatts of electricity. This capacity could power nearly one million homes with clean, renewable energy.

Located about 8.7 miles off the New Jersey coast, Atlantic Shores South is proposing up to 200 wind turbines and ten offshore substations, with submarine transmission cables potentially landing in Atlantic City and Sea Girt, New Jersey. BOEM has approved construction of up to 195 wind turbines.

Meeting U.S. Clean Energy Goals

The approval is a significant step toward achieving U.S. clean energy goals. Offshore wind is a key part of the nation’s strategy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and combat climate change. By harnessing wind power, the U.S. can reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and, in turn, reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In addition, the development of offshore wind projects creates numerous employment opportunities. From production and installation to maintenance and operation, these projects provide well-paid jobs for thousands of workers. Labor agreements with local unions, such as those involved in the Atlantic Shores South project, ensure that these benefits extend to local communities.

Development of offshore wind energy

The rapid progress in approving offshore wind projects underscores the administration’s commitment to using every tool at its disposal to grow America’s offshore wind industry. This growth not only strengthens the nation’s power grid, but also plays a critical role in addressing the climate crisis.

As the U.S. continues to expand its offshore wind footprint, it sets a precedent for other countries and encourages global efforts to invest in renewable energy. This shift toward sustainable energy sources is essential for a healthier planet and a more stable climate.

The approval of the Atlantic Shores South offshore wind project underscores the Biden administration’s commitment to clean energy. By focusing on innovative solutions and collaborative efforts, the United States is making significant progress toward a sustainable future. As more projects come online, the country is moving closer to its goal of a resilient, green energy infrastructure that benefits everyone.
