The Age of Chain Stores I recently spoke with Laura Kim, Senior Director of E-commerce and Merchandising at French toastto find out how an online supplier of school uniforms and other clothing uses its own AI technology to ensure that the clothes purchased online are correctly fitted to each individual customer.

What issues did French Toast face with sizing?

At French Toast, we are constantly looking for ways to improve our customer service, and finding the right size when shopping online is a challenge that everyone experiences. We understood that parents were looking for an easier way to find the right size for their child without complicated size charts and tape measures.

In addition, we wanted to eliminate the hassle of returns related to fit. We worked with AI technology provider Bold Metrics to design a custom Find Your Fit solution to reduce the difficulty customers have in finding the right size for their children. Our goal was to provide an accurate and easy solution while improving the overall shopping experience at French Toast.

How was the Find Your Fit app created?

We spent time researching and evaluating existing fitting solutions on the market and discovered that there was no custom fit solution available. Most existing fitting tools for children do not take into account that different garments have different fits and instead rely on comparing sizing information from other brands.

Bold Metrics partnered with us to build this personalized approach to using AI to help calculate recommended matches based on our customers’ unique inputs. We spent nearly two years on development, which included a year of data collection to build a model with Bold Metrics’ advanced AI and machine learning algorithms.

After almost two years of development, we launched the Find Your Fit app in February 2023.
