New leadership positions in CMA’s Digital Markets unit

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) today announced three senior appointments to help prepare for the introduction of a new competition regime for digital markets.

The passage of the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers (DMCC) Act in May gave the CMA new responsibilities to promote competition through a new, future-proof digital markets competition regime. Three senior directors will lead the CMA’s preparations as it prepares for the new regime, which is due to come into force later this year.

The Senior Directors are:

Batchelor the Cat

  • Cat, currently a director at the CMA, led the work on the new Digital Markets Competition Regime. Cat previously led the Digital Markets Taskforce, advising the government on the design and implementation of pro-competitive measures ahead of the introduction of the DMCC legislation. Before the CMA, Cat worked in various roles at the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), considering competition and innovation in financial services.

Tania Van den Brande

  • Tania will join the CMA from Ofcom later this year. Tania leads Ofcom’s work on digital markets, including the recent study into the cloud services market, and supports the implementation of the new Online Safety Act.

Euan MacMillan

  • Euan, also a current Director at the CMA, was responsible for leading the groundwork for the new digital regime. Euan has previously worked internationally on economic analysis, programming and policy – including secondments to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Pakistan.

Welcoming the appointments, Will Hayter, Executive Director, Digital Markets, said:

This is a truly exciting time to be at the CMA as we work hard to prepare for a new, competitive digital marketplace.

I congratulate Cat and Euan on their promotions and extend a warm welcome to Tania, who brings a wealth of digital markets experience from Ofcom to the team.

They are part of the outstanding team we are putting together to oversee a new, focused system that will ensure we can best tackle harmful practices and deliver positive outcomes for people, businesses and the UK economy.
