Xbox Cloud Gaming is now available on Amazon Fire TV Sticks

Xbox Cloud Gaming is now available on select Amazon Fire TV Sticks, following a new update. Those looking to play games on their devices who also have an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription will be able to download the Xbox app and stream games to their TV.

You’ll need a newer Fire TV Stick 4K or Fire TV Stick 4K Max, an active Game Pass subscription, a Bluetooth controller, AND a stable internet connection of at least 20Mbps / 5GHz Wi-Fi, but if you check all those boxes, the world of Xbox Cloud Gaming opens up to you. Interestingly, this also bypasses the need for a console – when using Cloud Gaming, all processes are performed in the cloud.

The move to expand Xbox Cloud Gaming to new devices is part of Microsoft’s broader push to extend Xbox gaming beyond the console. Back in 2021, Microsoft’s leadership team expressed interest in integrating the Xbox app and its cloud gaming systems natively into TVs, with great enthusiasm for a hardware-free future.

“We believe Microsoft can play a leading role in democratizing gaming and defining the future of interactive entertainment,” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said of that mission. “There are really three key areas where we think we have incredible competitive advantages: Number one, our leadership in cloud computing. Number two, the resources we have to build our subscription service, Xbox Game Pass. And number three, our overall focus on supporting creators.”

Microsoft’s vision appears to be becoming a reality, with integration with the Amazon Fire TV Stick being the latest step towards opening up access to Xbox Cloud Gaming.

How to Use Xbox Cloud Gaming with Amazon Fire TV Stick

To use Xbox Cloud Gaming with your Amazon Fire TV Stick, you must have access to the following:

  • Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K or 4K Max (2023 or 2024 models)
  • Bluetooth Controller (Xbox Wireless Xbox Adaptive, PlayStation DualSense, DualShock 4)
  • Active Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription
  • TV or alternative display
  • Stable internet with a bandwidth of at least 20 Mb/s

Once you have those requirements sorted, download the Xbox app on your Amazon Fire TV Stick. Then connect your controller, select Xbox Cloud Gaming from the app menu, and you should be ready to start playing, even without a console.

The biggest obstacle in this process will probably be maintaining a stable connection, especially if you have a weak Wi-Fi signal or simply live in Australia (which is consistently ranked as the country with the worst internet quality in the world), climb this hurdle and you’ll be ready to race.
