4 Gadgets That Will Help You Keep Your Home Clean, From Robot Vacuums to Electric Scrubbers

Having a clean and tidy home is a joy. Cleaning and organizing that home is less of a joy. While there are some elevated beings among us who consider scrubbing the stove a meditative experience, most people consider such tasks to be exhausting, hated chores undertaken only with reluctance.

Fortunately, steady technological advances continue to reduce the burden of housework. The popularization of washing machines and dishwashers revolutionized daily chores in the 1950s, freeing up valuable time for millions of people. New appliances are now contributing to this goal, aiming to become another ubiquitous household cleaning essential.

Here are four gadgets that will help you keep your home clean with minimal effort.

Unfortunately, keeping your home clean often requires hours of scrubbing until your fingers are permanently, painfully jammed in a clawed position. The Dremel Versa is an electric scrubber designed to make that task much easier by replacing your elbow-powered 2200 RPM.

The Versa has a ton of attachments available to meet your different scrubbing needs, whether you want to clean steel, grout, or glass. While the brushes screw on, the sponges attach to the Versa with a Velcro-like pad, keeping them firmly attached while also being ridiculously easy to swap out.

Dremel has a handy chart to help you choose the right sponge for different jobs, although it’s still a bit nerve-racking at first. As someone who’s accidentally scratched the shower glass with a power drill scrubber, you don’t want to use that much power unless you’re absolutely certain you’ve got the right bit. You should also consider wearing ear protection, especially if you’re using the Dremel Versa in an enclosed space like a shower. After all, it’s basically a drill.

However, once you get the hang of it, the Dremel Versa can be a great help in reducing your home maintenance burden.

A decade ago, robotic vacuum cleaners were often considered a novelty, more suitable as topics of drunken antics than reliable home helpers. They have evolved considerably over the years, evolving to the point where owning a robot vacuum cleaner is actually a reasonable proposition. The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra is the result of those years of technological advancements.

Mashable Speed of light

With 10,000 Pa of suction power, Roborock’s flagship does pretty much everything you could ask of a robot vacuum within the limits of current technology — and a few things you probably wouldn’t have thought to ask for, too. In addition to vacuuming and mopping your floors, the S8 MaxV Ultra’s docking station lets you automatically wash its own microfiber mop pad, empty the dust bin, refill the water tank, and even refill the detergent. Using LiDAR and AI to identify obstacles and navigate your home, the S8 MaxV Ultra can respond to voice commands and even has a novel in-app pet tracking feature, so you can keep an eye on your furry friend with its built-in camera.

The camera quality isn’t anything special, but the S8 MaxV Ultra is a powerhouse when it comes to cleaning, which is its primary purpose. The standout feature of the robot vacuum is its FlexiArm Design side brush, which reaches into corners and under low furniture that might otherwise be missed. The edge mop also provides thorough cleaning along walls.

One caveat is that this handy robotic friend will cost a pretty penny. The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra is one of the most expensive robot vacuums on the market right now, meaning it will appeal primarily to those with a few thousand dollars to spend. But if you’re tired of vacuuming and want a set-it-and-forget-it solution to keeping your floors clean, the S8 MaxV Ultra may be worth the investment.

As someone who lives in a fairly suburban area, I used to think air purifiers were largely unnecessary gadgets. Having lived through a few terrible bushfire seasons that engulfed my home in smoke, I now know better.

Regardless of whether you are dealing with smoke from a forest fire or city smog, a good air purifier can be essential for home comfort. After all, it’s hard to relax if you can’t even get a breath of fresh, clean air. The Coway Airmega 200M is a relatively unassuming workhorse that can keep the air clean in its 361-square-foot space, whether you’re binge-watching Netflix in the living room or optimizing sleep in the bedroom. The result is an environment that feels undeniably fresher and calmer.

The Airmega 200M has four stages of filtration: a pre-filter to capture larger particles like hair and dust; a deodorizing filter to capture odors; a True HEPA filter to capture ultra-fine particles like pollen, viruses, and germs; and an essential ionizer to capture ultra-fine particles that previous filters failed to capture.

The whisper-quiet Conway air purifier has a timer that can be set for one, four or eight hours, as well as three different fan speeds. It also has an Eco mode that saves energy by turning the fan off if the Airmega 200M doesn’t detect a contaminant for half an hour, then turning it back on when it does.

Having lots of windows can make a home feel fresh and bright, allowing in natural light that can transform an otherwise dreary space. Unfortunately, these benefits are greatly diminished if you can’t keep those windows clean.

The GlassVAC Solo Plus window vacuum from Bosch aims to make this task simple, vacuuming and sucking up liquids for a neat, streak-free finish. Featuring a spray bottle attached to a microfibre head, this portable gadget is designed to clean windows, mirrors, shower screens, tiles and other such surfaces. Simply switch it on, vacuum as normal and watch the dirty water collect in the 100ml tank instead of on the windowsill.

The vacuum isn’t as effective when the GlassVAC Solo Plus is run horizontally on surfaces rather than vertically, and may not pick up every drop. Depending on how wet the window was, you may still need to give the sill a quick wipe. However, the GlassVAC Solo Plus does a great job of significantly reducing mess and is particularly useful for morning condensation on bedroom windows.

The GlassVAC Solo Plus vacuum cleaner from Bosch also does not produce the characteristic squeaking sound that occurs with most standard squeegees, which is a definite advantage.
