Lost Gardens of Heligan appoints new CEO

Lost Gardens of Heligan, one of Cornwall’s top tourist attractions, has appointed a new chief executive. David Harland will join the St Austell-based organisation on a permanent basis after serving for several years as an independent advisor to the boards of the Heligan and Smit families.

Mr Harland’s new role also includes looking after the Shipwreck and Treasure Museum in Charlestown and Gillyflower Farm in Lostwithiel.

He said: “I am thrilled to be working with the team. I have always loved Heligan and have followed its development for a long time – one of my first jobs as a student was in the gardens in 1995. This is an exciting time for us as we focus on the heart of what The Lost Gardens of Heligan and our associated businesses represent for our team, visitors and followers.”

Over the last 10 years Mr Harland has held a number of senior positions within the Eden Project in Cornwall, including Group Chief Executive and inaugural Chief Executive Officer of Eden Project International.

He is also an independent board member of Falmouth University and was recently appointed to the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Climate Commission to help lead, direct, support and track climate action.

Speaking on behalf of the directors, Sir Tim Smit said: “We are delighted to welcome David Harland to our team at Heligan and Smit Associates. Personally, I feel like a football manager who has convinced a great player to join our amazing team and help it develop. We are all excited and look forward to a long and successful future together.”

The attraction announced the appointment of Laura Chesterfield as Managing Director earlier this year. Laura will continue to provide leadership and oversight for all aspects of The Lost Gardens of Heligan.
