India sees 33% increase in diversity employment, led by BFSI and IT

Diversity-focused hiring in India grew 33 percent year-on-year this month, with BFSI and IT-Software & Services sectors leading the charge, according to the latest foundit–Insights Tracker (fit) report for June 2024. The report highlights the growing importance of diversity and inclusion (D&I) initiatives.

According to the tracker, the overall employment rate rose from 295 in May 2024 to 302 in June 2024. On a year-on-year basis, there was a 12 percent increase in employment, indicating strong momentum in employment opportunities. Employment has seen a solid 15 percent increase in the last six months, reinforcing a positive outlook for 2024. These trends underscore the dynamic and evolving nature of the Indian job market.

Commenting on the remarkable progress in diversity hiring in June 2024, Sekhar Garisa, CEO, foundit (formerly Monster APAC & ME), a Quess company, said, “The 33 per cent year-on-year increase in diversity hiring underscores the critical role that D&I policies play in shaping today’s workforce in India. We commend Indian companies for prioritizing inclusivity and achieving such significant growth. Looking ahead, we envision an even deeper focus on inclusivity through initiatives such as mentoring and leadership programs for underrepresented groups and bias training at all levels.”

“Companies can lead with innovative approaches like D&I labs or councils to deepen their inclusion efforts and reverse mentoring programs where young employees from diverse backgrounds mentor senior leaders. Through these initiatives, companies can build truly inclusive workplaces and set the stage for a vibrant and equitable workforce in India. We are proud to support this transformational evolution and are committed to helping employers create inclusive workplaces,” he added.

BFSI and IT-Software and Services industries are leading in employing people with diverse profiles

Over the past few years, Indian companies have been focusing on hiring candidates from diverse groups, including women, LGBTQIA+ people, and people with disabilities (PwD), underlining the importance of diversity and inclusion (D&I) policies in corporations. Despite some fluctuations, the overall trend remains positive, with significant peaks in Pride Month in June 2023 (37%) and May 2024 (57%), reflecting key diversity initiatives.

The sectors that saw the largest increase in diversity-related job vacancies were BFSI and IT-Software and Services (IT-ITeS), which accounted for 30% and 19% of all job vacancies, respectively.

In addition, companies are adopting structured D&I programs, such as anti-discrimination training, diverse interview panels, and targeted hiring, to encourage and recognize underrepresented groups. Job ads now use inclusive language, such as recording a candidate’s preferred pronouns, to avoid gender bias. Other industries that showed strong numbers of diverse representation included healthcare (6 percent), internet/e-commerce (4 percent), and education (3 percent).
