US Navy Purchases Persistent Systems Networking Devices to Support Littoral Operations

MPU5 networked devices on unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) enable real-time streaming of sensor data for expeditionary operations.

NEW YORK, July 9, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Persistent Systems, LLC (“Persistent”), a leader in mobile ad hoc network (MANET) technology, today announced that the U.S. Naval Warfare Information Center (NIWC) Pacific has awarded the company $1.3 million contract to supply the U.S. Navy with MPU5 networking equipment and integrated sector antennas in support of expeditionary operations/littoral warfare.

The sector antennas and MPU5 will create a secure network between unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), individual operators, ships and ground control stations (GCS). This network will consolidate data to enhance situational awareness and accelerate operations in littoral domains through a unified communications and command center.

“By integrating unmanned systems with our wireless Wave Relay® MANET technology, the U.S. Navy gains real-time data, including radar, sonar, chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive (CBRNe) information in any littoral theater, allowing users to safely reach shore and maintain situational awareness aboard ships in the area of operations (AO),” said Ed LeopoldDirector of Business Development, U.S. Navy, Persistent Systems.

Leopold noted that “real-time wireless data collection via the MPU5 is a dramatic improvement over current procedures that require operators to manually retrieve a USV containing critical Area of Responsibility (AoR) data onto an SD card, which they then have to remove and insert into a designated computer for data analysis.”

The Navy has been testing Persistent’s MANET technology for expeditionary warfare and other CONOPS for nearly five years, according to company officials. But this latest contract is the largest USV-focused MANET purchase to date.

“Our Wave Relay® MANET technology is currently deployed on Navy USVs, Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs), patrol boats and other vessels. Future testing will scale with more MANET nodes in line of sight (LOS) and beyond line of sight (BLOS),” Leopold said.

This is the second NIWC Pacific contract Persistent Systems has been awarded. Earlier this year, the company announced it had been awarded a contract $3.6 million contract for integration of MPU5 with Navy sensors.

“The Navy has shown great confidence in our solutions, which has allowed us to be involved in USV development from the very beginning as the technology has developed,” Leopold added.
