House panel boosts nuclear safety, cuts renewable energy funding

The Energy Department will be barred from imposing more stringent energy efficiency standards for some home appliances under a package of changes approved Tuesday by a House committee.

The measure in the House of Representatives’ fiscal year 2025 energy and water development spending bill would prevent funds from being used to finalize stricter environmental standards for gas stoves, air conditioners, modular homes and transformers.

The measure is unlikely to become law in its current form. The House of Representatives separately passed legislation Tuesday that would block the Biden administration from setting tougher efficiency standards for consumer refrigerators, freezers and dishwashers.
