Some Galaxy Watch devices already detect sleep apnea

Some Galaxy Watch users are starting to receive the sleep apnea detection feature, coming just a day before the Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra launch. The brand will likely debut the feature on its next-generation watches, while older models could see it widely available in the coming months. The company also recently introduced a new BioActive sensor to future smartwatches.

Sleep apnea is a subtle condition that causes pauses in breathing during sleep in those affected. The Galaxy Watch was first linked to monitoring the condition in February, when Samsung received FDA approval to integrate it in the US. There’s been no new information on the subject since then. But now, the feature seems closer than ever.

Sleep apnea detection is available on some Galaxy Watch devices running beta software

A Reddit user reported that his Galaxy Watch received the Sleep Apnea feature in the last few hours. The option appeared after an update to the Samsung Health Monitor app, which also included information on how to use it. However, this does not appear to be a mass rollout, but rather testing for participants in the One UI Watch 6 beta. The beta is currently available for the Galaxy Watch 4, 5, and 6.

According to the Samsung Health Monitor app, sleep apnea detection requires a user to analyze their sleep for at least two nights. During the analysis, the Galaxy Watch will track the number of “relative drops in blood oxygen” a person experiences. This will allow the device to determine whether the user suffers from the condition and to what extent. After a few nights, the feature will automatically turn off.

Will be available on Galaxy Watch 4 and newer models

The Samsung Health Monitor app also details the compatibility of the sleep apnea feature. It is said to be available from the Galaxy Watch 4 upwards, on devices running Wear OS 5 and One UI Watch 6. While there is no official confirmation, it is likely that sleep apnea will be available on the Galaxy Watch 7 and Watch Ultra first. In the meantime, older models may have to wait for the wide rollout of One UI Watch 6. Those interested in testing can also sign up for the beta program.
